Description
Burrowing Owl Portrait,
This colorful scene was taken at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington DC. This beautiful burrowing owl was inside the mammal house. A nice surprising find. The background is the natural background which is what I loved about photographing this beauty. it was a rather unique, fun, colorful background.
This burrowing owl was checking out all the on goers. He seemed a bit sleepy, but not wanting to miss any action.
A couple of facts about burrowing owls:
Did you know that unlike other owls, burrowing owls are actually active during the day? Yes, it's true. And did you know that they prefer open areas with low ground cover?
I am always curious as to what an animal or bird likes to eat. Can you guess what the burrowing owl likes to eat? Believe it or not, they eat seasonally. Meaning, in the late spring and early summer this owl likes to eat mice and moles. Fall and winter they switch to insects, especially grasshoppers and beetles. Burrowing owls are also known to eat birds, amphibians and reptiles.
Last question. What kind of sound does the burrowing owl make? a tremulous chuckling or chattering call.
Last fact: the burrowing owls also bob their heads to express excitement or distress. Very cute and funny site. They are so adorable!! So be sure to visit the mammal house if you ever decide to spend a few hours at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington DC. Lots of fun! Emmy Vickers,

Always great seeing these owls. We have a park that was set up specifically for Burrowing Owls. I've seen up to 9 at a time, and they're always fun to watch. Nice shot!
