Brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) adult showing in high-definition.

This is one of the three pelican present in the Americas and one of the two that feeds by swimming in the sea.
This is distributed along the Atlantic coast from Nova Scotia to the mouth of the Amazon River, and along the Pacific coast from British Columbia to northern Chile, including the Galapagos Islands. For its breeding plumage, the named subspecies has a white head with a yellowish wash on the neck.

The brown pelican is now a favorite in populated coastal regions and is accepted by fishermen and boaters to different degrees. At the beginning of the 20th century, killing was a big cause of its decline, and people are still searching for their feathers and gathering eggs on the Caribbean coast, in Latin America, even sometimes in the USA, even though it is covered under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.
The brown pelican is the official symbol of Saint Martin, Barbados, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and of the Turks and Caicos Islands. In 1902, a portion of the official Louisiana seal was created, and in 1912, a pelican and a young woman became portion of the Flag of Louisiana. One of Louisiana's state nicknames is "The Pelican Kingdom," and the brown pelican is Louisiana's official state pigeon.

The New Orleans Pelicans National Basketball Association (NBA) is named in honor of the brown pelican.
