Description
The Courir de Mardi Gras is a fun Cajun Creole tradition that centered around collecting ingredients for a community gumbo. Masked riders in colorful costumes and tall pointed hats ride through rural Acadiana on horseback. There are several communities that host these runs. Participants go from house to house. A captain leads the group. He rides ahead to ask homeowners if they will Welcome the Mardi Gras and if they will consider donating to the community gumbo. If the homeowners agree the captain waves a flag and the Mardi Gras participants sing, dance, beg, and do their best to entertain. If the home owner is pleased they may donate: seasoning, rice, oil, flour, sausage or the favorite ingredient chicken. Now the chickens are the freshest. They are healthy and fast on their feet. The crowds which follow the Mardi Gras as well as the homeowners are again entertained as the men in costumes chase the chickens under or over fences, under houses, up trees, through open prairie, and anywhere a chicken feels like running to escape. Sometimes homeowners donate money but the community tries to collect the ingredients and money's collected may go to disadvantaged neighbors, churches, schools, homeless shelters or some other worthwhile cause. With the invention of cell phones the hand painted signs the riders would carry to ask for ingredients that they hadn't collected have greatly dwindled. I miss the signs that often would pop up on the second half of the journey. The captain often had blank signs at homes along the route ready to be painted and while the Mardi Gras entertained someone at that home painted request for the particular ingredients.
My original painting was donated for a church bingo prize in a little town that is famous for its Mardi Gras.
If you like this painting you may like Being More Roux, which was the first painting in the series with Courir Dr Mardi Gras signs.
