Title
Blue Hydrangeas
Artist
Ken Powers
Medium
Painting - Watercolor On Paper
Description
This hydrangea was growing in my neighbor's yard and was just begging to be painted. Once again, I wanted to play around with my new Prussian Blue to see how it mixed and interacted with some of the other paint I use. This piece is entirely painted with Rublev 18th century historical reproduction watercolor paint on Arches 140# cold-pressed paper. The original is 13.5"x10" in size.

This is gorgeous. I can see that you must start with such a good drawing!! When things seem this complicated to draw I tend to freeze up. How do you keep it all straight in your mind? Excellent.
Ken Powers replied:
Thank you Diane! Sometimes I overdraw and it is detrimental to the end piece. I am trying to force myself to only contour draw and leave light landmarks so I will be forced to paint in the details and gradations. But, it is a constant battle to keep myself from overworking not only the painting but also the drawing. I guess our techniques are always evolving, aren't they?

Reminds me of the 1/2 barrel tipped on it's side, spilling out the blue flowers, much like water I made for my mom & stepdad. Love the concept.

Beautiful painting - I love the subtle dialogue between the flower and the muted green surrounding it - It really pushes the flower forward and makes it sparkle -
