The budgerigar is a long-tailed, seed-eating parrot usually called a budgie, or a parakeet. Most caged budgies are between 7 or 8 inches from the beak to tail, but wild budgies are a little smaller. Budgies are the third most popular pet in the world after dogs and cats. They have been bred in captivity since the 19th century.
