Black Racer 4
Photograph - Photograph
The Black Racer is a long, slender non-venomous snake with large, prominent eyes. Adults are black or bluish/black with white or whitish markings on the chin and throat. Juveniles are gray with distinct reddish-brown blotches running down the back of the head and body. I found this one enjoying some warm springtime sunshine along the lower portion of the Cullers Trail in Shenandoah River State Park, near Bentonville, Virginia. This one’s skin was so glossy and iridescent I’m guessing it had just recently shed its skin. They can become rather aggressive when they feel threatened, but this one seemed rather unconcerned as I snapped away… He finally made his way, in no particular hurry, into the grass along the trail, where I captured one last photo.
