TO SET AFLOAT No. 2 "The Song of Grace" came to life here in my studio in Asheville, North Carolina, USA. This is a dreamscape (inner landscape.) It is Fusion-Collage-Paintography –a hand-over-heart- visual narrative; a continuation of an unfolding story. This image symbolizes the plea for change with compassion.
This image intends to elicit a feeling of COMPASSION.
"The Song of Grace" is a portrait of what it actually FEELS like to endure suffering. Pain is painted in strident color- but there is more, for this image intends to reveal that we ALL share that common feeling- we ALL face the tyranny of being cast as "THE OTHER" at one time or another in our lifetimes.
Our mutual struggle- (from sources large or small) - begs for understanding. The woman, with her hand-over-heart- cries out, yet , from a place deep within, there is a feeling of resilience with the emotional rawness of her plea expressed in the color palette and brush strokes. The struggle in our very human story of the "better-than-thou" mythos seems to LEAK from the eyes of the woman making my heart bleed, too." Please recognize my/our value," they seem to say.
When, as a viewer, I look in those eyes that implore a recognition, I FEEL my own vulnerability. There is a visceral reaction. I ache for her and for all who suffer.
I am moved. I want to answer her plea for change with compassion.
“The Song of Grace“ - this woman, hand-over heart, deep in emotion, may bring a tear to the viewer's eyes.
For me, the piece sings, “... and what did I see, coming for to carry me home, a band of angels coming after me, coming for to carry me home ... .”
In the creation of this emotive piece, I use bits from my original canvas with a backdrop of photos and verse to create a collage with hidden characters. Digitally-layered elements of color and texture seek to bring the piece into an assemblage of meaning.
