The Colosseum, Rome's amphitheatre

Everyone in the planet has heard of the Colosseum, right? But did you know that this was not the structure's original name? The Colosseum was conceptualized and built during the era of Emperor Vespasian (it was opened during the reign of his son, Titus, and completed during the reign of Domitian, his other son). The rule of these emperors was known as the Flavian Dynasty, and the Flavian Amphitheater was named for them. The 'Colosseum' is only a moniker.

The term Colosseum is said to have derived from the towering golden monument that stood just outside the amphitheater. This statue was so "colossal" that it bled over into the Colosseum. Originally a statue of the notorious Emperor Nero, it was transformed into a sun-god.
