Description
Big Betsy is a giant rendition of the Florida Keys most popular seafood dish, the Spiny Lobster. She was created by Sculptor Richard Blaze, who was hired by a local restauranteur to create the piece, but by the time she was finished the restaurant had gone out of business. The artwork was aquired by the late Tom Vellanti who put it on display at his Treasure Village, but when that location became a school, Betsy had no place to go. Luckily she has found a new permanent home. In 2009 she was brought out of storage and put back on display in her current location at Rain Barrel Village, on Overseas Highway in Isla Morada. Right off the highway, there is no need to make a detour to see this great attraction. She is made from fiberglass and stands 30 feet high and 40 feet long,. Next to the Southernmost Point, Betsy is thought to be the most photographed attraction in the Florida Keys.
