As American As Baseball And Apple Pie
Digital Art - Digital Painting/photographic Art
I hope you'll forgive me still for not being able yet to respond to every comment or to visit each of you to thank you personally for your visits and lovely comments. I have about two more weeks before I can sit comfortably for any length of time to write comments. I've tried to catch a few of you in the past few days but it's a drop in the proverbial bucket, I'm afraid. Please do know that I cherish your visits and I'll be by to visit you as soon as I can. I had this art work completed before my surgery but was saving it for closer to the 4th of July holiday.
The title saying has many variations - as American as...motherhood, baseball and apple pie...baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet...as baseball and apple pie. And while any version is relatively new to the American lexicon, the symbols and the sentiment are not. Apple pie is mentioned as early as 1649 in a Plymouth colony journal and the Pennsylvania Dutch perfected the pastry along with other fruit pie variations. While not entirely an American creation it has been so long identified with our country that it is one of our most visible symbols.
Baseball of course IS an American creation and it would take far too much space to go into the entire history (which you can find on my antique baseball card paintings) here. Suffice it to say that baseball is considered America's No.1 sport and certainly the sport most identified with summer. Baseball's All Star game is played in July and the famous Lou Gehrig retirement speech was made on July 4, 1939 at Yankee Stadium.
So the 4th of July approaches and one cannot help but think of those symbols that are most American and that are indicative of the culture in so many ways. An apple pie and all the equipment necessary for a baseball game resting on an American flag certainly qualifies. This is a digital oil/impasto painting based on a photograph in the public domain courtesy Scott Bauer of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It has been digitally enhanced and then hand painted using a variety of brushes, filters and painting programs.
