For awhile I was a little disappointed driving through Custer State Park, in South Dakota USA. This was supposed to be THE place to see bison and I hadn’t seen anything but some deer. But FINALLY, a large herd right on the side of the road, happily munching away on the grass! This adult female patiently posed while I rolled down the car window and shot a lot of photos. The population of bison in the US today is around a half million, up from the nearly decimated population of 541 animals in 1889 but well down from the 60 million in the late 18th century. Even with the recovered numbers, it’s still a thrill to see the bison up close!
