Description

As the sun starts its decent at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, shadows are cast against the canyon walls creating interesting shapes. According to the park's website, the Grand Canyon was granted Federal protection in 1893 as a Forest Reserve and later as a National Monument. It did not achieve National Park status until 1919, three years after the creation of the National Park Service. Today Grand Canyon National Park receives close to five million visitors each year.

The North Rim is accessible from Saint George,Utah, and is more remote and less developed than the South Rim, and attracts far fewer tourists. Since the North Rim is at a higher elevation, its viewpoints are the most spectacular according to many visitors. The North Rim forms the edge of the Kaibab Plateau, with elevation ranging from 8,000-8,800 feet above sea level. Access via Hwy 67 takes visitors through a majestic conifer forest and past scenic Jacob Lake for a beautiful drive, even before you reach the national park.
