Description
The ritual ceremony of the flyers is a dance associated with fertility performed by various ethnic groups from Mexico and Central America, in particular the Totonacos from the State of Veracruz, located in eastern Mexico. Its purpose is to express professed respect for nature and the spiritual universe, as well as harmony with both. During the ceremony, four young men climb a 18- to 40-meter-high pole made from the trunk of a recently cut tree in the forest after imploring the forgiveness of the mountain god. Sitting on the platform that ends the mast, a fifth man, the caporal, plays with a flute and a drum melodies in honor of the sun, as well as the four winds and cardinal points. After this act of invocation, the dancers launch themselves into the void from the platform to which they are tied by long ropes, spin imitating the flight of birds as the rope unrolls, and gradually descend to the ground.
