The Dome of the Rock is the focal point atop the Haram es-Sharif (also known as the Temple Mount). Built atop the sacred rock (Foundation Stone) from which Muslim's believe Muhammad ascended to heaven on his night journey, the Dome of the Rock sits on the most contested piece of real estate in the religious world. Jews, Christians, and Muslims all claim connections to the sacred rock.
Judaism reveres the Temple Mount as the sacred location of the 1st & 2nd Temples,where God's divine presence rests (Isaiah 8:18). Ancient rabbinic scholars believed God gathered the primordial dust for the creation of Adam from the Temple Mount, thus positioning the location as the center or 'navel' of the world. Additional biblical interpretations (though disputed among biblical scholars) suggests the binding of Isaac (Genesis 22:1-19) took place on the rock under the Dome
Christians honor the site for both its Jewish connections and the role of the Temple Mount in the life of Jesus. Certain segments of Christianity stand with Jewish interpretations which believe the Dome of the Rock must be removed to make way for a third Jewish Temple.
The oldest Islamic shrine in the world, the Dome of the Rock features an octagonal Byzantine architectural design, beautiful blue Persian tiles and glistening golden dome.
