Description
London's iconic Tower Bridge spans the River Thames alongside the famous Tower of London. Built in the late 19th century (1886-1894), Tower Bridge stands as one of England's landmark feats of engineering and architecture and an icon of London's cityscape. The bascule and suspension bridge was designed by Sir Horace Jones, London's City Architect, and his engineer, Sir John Wolfe Barry--besting 50 designs submitted in open competition. The lower center span draws open, allowing large ships to pass up the River Thames. The twin towers are built to withstand the massive, daily tidal current in the Thames. Tourists flock to Tower Bridge in hopes of capturing the quintessentially British tourism postcard image.
