Description
Softly, gently -- like the introduction to a harmonious song -- sunrise sends its glow over the Columbia River. A gaggle of geese swims peacefully into the day's beginning.
For a person who is up early on a walk, such a sight is the beautiful beginning to the day ā a promise that, no matter how hectic the day gets with its many demands and anxieties (because, in our āmodernā world we see a day of demands and anxieties to be normal), the reminder of this quiet, gentle time on the river is enough to bring one back to the things that matter: the gentle flow of the river, the soft honking of the geese, the wind whispering gently through the leaves.
Time in nature ā whether it is in a city park or out in the wilderness ā is crucial to feeding our souls as human beings. After all, the first place created was a garden ā not a skyscraper, not an office cubicle, not a schoolroom. It is telling that, in the book of Genesis of the Bible, the place where God created to put man was a garden, but the place that man built to displace God was a tall, āmodernā edifice.
So it is as we go through our day, seeking a place of solitude and rest. Rarely does our mind think, āIāll take the elevator up to the 40th story of that skyscraper and Iāll find a nice desk to sit behind. There Iāll be able to contemplate the beauty of the desk set, the computer screen, the blinds that cover the windows.ā
No, when we seek a place to think, it is often a place that God made, not humans ā whether it is a place of majesty like the mountains or the sea, or a place of quiet tranquility like a slow moving river on a quiet morn.
Sunrise on the Columbia is featured on 36 Fine Art America groups.

Steve this is truly an inspirational site. Having photographed many waterfowl and water sites at sunrise (though not often enough!) I can truly live in the moment of your artwork...for just a moment. I favorited this piece. Carol
Steve Henderson replied:
Thank you, Carol, for taking the time to "live in the moment" through these artworks. Congratulations on some nice photography work -- especially your swans.
