Description
One of my favorite views in the Lofoten Islands has to be this view looking over Reine, Norway, set on the island of Moskenesøya, a quaint, small village of fisherman's cabins and boat houses, in the Arctic circle, set overlooking Sakrisoya, Hammroy, Hamnoy, Mt Olstind, Olnilsoya, Lilandstinden and Klokktinden mountains, Reine has been a commercial center since 1743 and is considered one of the most beautiful areas in Norway.
There is evidence of human settlement extending back at least 11,000 years in Lofoten, and the earliest archaeological sites ... are only about 5,500 years old, at the transition from the early to late Stone Age." Iron Age agriculture, livestock, and significant human habitation can be traced back to c. 250 BC.
For more than 1,000 years the area has been a centre of great cod fisheries, especially in winter, when the cod migrates south from the Barents Sea in mid-January and gather in Lofoten to spawn. The fishing boats were just beginning to go to sea again after the holidays, the first week in January when this photo was taken, as the fish were returning from their winter migration south.
Surrounded by water, the Norwegian sea and various fjords, the weather is mild and temperate relative to it's very northerly location. Reine is in the Arctic Circle.
The sun had not begun to rise above the horizon from it's deep sleep in winter when this photo was snapped.
