Description
The skyline of the New District of Instanbul, including the Galata Tower. Across the Golden Horn from the historic districts of Istanbul is the "new district". This part of the city was once the Genoese citadel of Galata in the late Byzantine era. After the city was conquered by the Ottomans, there remained tolerance for the minorities. This area therefore has many of the synagogues and churches in Istanbul. It the Ottoman era, espeically since the 18th century, this area of the city became home to many of the European merchants and embassies. Genoese fortifications were mostly destroyed in the 1800s, but the Galata tower (seen on the right of the photo) still stands. This is part of Beyoglu district, which forms Istanbul's commercial and entertainment center and includes Istiklal Caddesi (Street) and Taksim Square. On the shoreline is an active fish market and a great place to get a fried mackerel sandwich!
