Description

The most recognizable image of Lake Bled in Slovenia is the Church of the Mother of God in the middle of the lake’s island. And a favorite photography quest is a blue hour photo of the scene. Fog is a plus and on the morning we were there, the mist on the lake floated in and out providing an ever-changing mood to the scene. the mist rising from the lake gave the scene a magical quality. The first Christian church in this location was built in 745 and replaced a temple dedicated to the goddess of life and fertility. It was renovated in 1465 when the 52m-high bell tower was added, and again in the 17th century. You can climb up the 99 steps to the top of the bell tower for a great view of the surrounding countryside and if you want to get married in the church, tradition has it that the groom must carry the bride up all 99 steps! Lake Bled is located in the Julian Alps region of northwestern Slovenia.
