Flat rocks and gentle waves of the Indian Ocean at Penguin Island, which is 12.5 ha (31 acres) island off the coast near Perth, Western Australia, approximately 660 m (722 yd) from Shoalwater. It is home to a colony of approximately 1200 little penguins, the largest population of the birds in Western Australia. The waters surrounding the island make up the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park.
The Shoalwater Islands Marine Park is a protected marine park located in Western Australia and stretches from the northern point of the Garden Island Causeway to the southern point of Becher Point. The 6,540-hectare (16,200-acre) marine park is located offshore from the suburban locality of Shoalwater.
Several small limestone islands are located within the boundaries of the park, including Penguin Island and Seal Island.
