Description
The old log house is located at the Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area in the George Washington National Forest near Fort Valley in Virginia. Elizabeth Furnace was a blast furnace in the Shenandoah Valley used to create pig iron from 1836 – 1888. There is not a lot of history readily available about the log house, itself.

you know that I am going to ask about the history!! Love looking at the sad little house and wonder what happened? A great piece of photography, David. As always. It looks like it has a basement??
David Beard replied:
I've not been able to find any specific background information on the old house.... The U.S. government has owned the land since 1913, and from the 1830s into the 1880s there was a small community centered around an iron furnace.... this house might be a remnant of that community... Anyway, very glad you like the photograph!
