Description
This eastern phoebe was perched on a low branch by the oxbow in Tampa, Florida's Lettuce Lake park looking for an insect for lunch.
A tyrant flycatcher, the eastern phoebe (sayornis phoebe) ranges from upper midwest Canada to the eastern United States and down through Texas and eastern Mexico. This migratory songbird breeds in the northern part of its range and winters in the south.
Look for them in open woodland areas like yards, parks, farms, and woodland edges often near water. They will usually be on lower perches looking for the flying insects, spiders, ticks and millipedes that make up the bulk of their diet.
