Description
Staying close to Craigmillar Castle means I can wander up to this beautiful medieval castle easily. Today was a gorgeous sunny early autumn day, what made an even better day is the castle was no open to visitors, so i couldn’t refuse a visit inside my local castle.
Craigmillar Castle is situated a couple of miles south east of Edinburgh City Centre and is a 14th century Medieval Castle that has featured in T.V and Films including Outlander and Outlaw King and is one of Edinburgh’s hidden highlights.
The land surrounding the castle was bought by the Preston family in the late 14th century and Sir Simon Preston, who came from the Preston tower in East Lothian. Simon wasted no time in building an L shaped Tower House which included a great hall, storage vaults and high status accommodation on the upper levels. The tower at Craigmillar Castle was modelled on St David’s Tower in Edinburgh Castle, which was built around 1360.
The castle was significantly expanded during the 15th century, which included the surrounding walls and turrets.
In the mid 16th (1566) century Craigmillar Castle hosted Mary Queen of Scots and it is here where the plot to kill Lord Darnley (Mary’s English husband) was hatched.
Craigmillar Castle during the 17th (1660 ish) century was sold Sir John Gilmour , but during mid 17th century was abandoned and from there the Castle deteriorated into a ruin. The castle has since been restored by Historic Environment Scotland and now offers visitors a great medieval castle experience.
I was born just a few hundred yards from Craigmillar Castle as was my father. I definitely have an affinity and some fantastic memories of playing in and around the stunning Craigmillar Castle.
I highly recommend a visit as the whole area around the Castle has been transformed with the addition of Craigmillar Castle Park and Hawkhill Woods, making for a great half day trip.
Thanks for looking.
