Description
Recently I was fortunate to be one of the first (2012) to see the Board of Trade vault open to the public since it was built 84 years ago and I made the most of the opportunity. I spent a solid hour being totally immersed with all the details inside and out. I was equally captivated with the thought of all the folks that have walked in and out of this vault over the decades.
This vault door is in the basement of the Chicago Board of Trade and it weighs in at roughly 22 tons, is made of drill resistant steel, and has four watch movements for the time lock. Inside the door are roughly 2,000 individual lock boxes of various sizes and shapes. At one time this safe held everything from gold, silver, money, to stock certificates. They stopped using this safe and it sat empty for several decades.
From an artistic point of view, I generally don’t like taking straight up shots, but in this case, it works. I took countless photographs of this door focusing in on the individual gears and pinions and they make great abstracts, but I think the sheer size and complexity of this door makes a more compelling image.
I usually don’t post multiple photos of the same subject, but I will make an exception for this magnificent vault.
All proceeds will be donated to Chicago's Cornerstone Community Outreach in honor of photographer Richard Cleis, 1965-2021.
