oh my, wow, this is fabulous, Brian. I really can't figure out how you created the background here but the entire ensemble is fabulous. I also love how he actually gives the appearance as if he is ruling the roost.....very expressive.

Thank you, Sabina! No trick to it. Nature provided the background. The quail was perched on a cable, completely shaded. The hillside behind him was tall grass brightly lit by the late day sun. The definition of the grass is blurred by my f-stop setting and the distance behind him. I'll be posting another version where the f-stop defines the grasses more. The surprising part was just how close he let me get. I have rarely been this close on a trail. I usually have to photograph them in my yard from behind a window.
