Do You Have Fun?

Do you have fun when you create art? Perhaps it is expressing the agony of everyday life? If art is not fun why do you do it? I will admit great art does not need to be fun and perhaps the term fun is a detriment to creating great art. Personally for better or worse I enjoy creating art. You?

Do I Have Fun???

You better believe it

If I didn't have fun, I wouldn't be doing what I've been doing all these 50 years.

Sometimes it's an ordeal maintaining the "Fun"...But I keep on plowing through

I don't do "art" for fun. It's more of a necessity to keep the demons under control.
Fun is also highly overrated. Fun is OK, but not an aim in my life.
I probably did have fun taking pics of beautiful women at one time but that was a long time ago.

David King

Enjoyment, yes, usually, though often frustrating. I wouldn't really call it fun.

I find art fun and healing.

Now my attention is shifting to making music. I am con-jiggering the costs of a keyboard and a Christmas marketing push.

It should be doable. I think I am going to shift the marketing budget upward only as I have success, if by mid November.

I like chasing money. Mixed results, but it matters where you are at the end of the day not during the journey. Old family proverb.

As or IF as a composer, I would play constantly.....'play' as in play around. The serious side is learning complex pieces, the fun part is trying to ride the composing ability up next to the serious stuff skill wise. In this my art will be very different from my music. I never tried to compete with a Rembrandt painting. I am much more serious about having more traditional skills in composing. The actual details.

Other than the keyboard being electric, I may never go to any electric sound. Talking about being radical.....smiling....ideas shuffling in my mind.

Yes I have fun. When it stops being fun I'll stop doing it.

Marlene, you had a T-Bird? :P

James McCormack

I have fun, especially since Marlene's Daddy lent me her T bird for the weekend.

Some emotional intensity and suffering depending on the piece.

Mario Carta

Way to much fun at times.

I had a bit more fun back in the day, when I loaded up my giant bag of gear, fueled up my classic car, and cruised wherever the moment took me.

The 'fun' is a bit more restrained now, but no less gratifying: grab the camera and/or crank up the computer (and the accompanying tunes, audio books, ambient sounds or whatever), zip open my brain, and let the creativity flow!

What's not to enjoy? :-)

It's way fun to know I have the freedom to make fun!

And don't forget.....fun spelled backwards is.....nuf.

Just having a little creative word fun there. :O)

If I'm trying out something new, it can be fun.... but that wears off quickly. I would say it's more contentment, sometimes a little excitement or frustration, but generally it's a good experience... until it isn't. It's usually pain or my vision that will stop the process of making art for a few hours, or for the day.

I met them on a Monday and my heart stood still
Da Bill Ron Ron, da Bill Ron Ron
Yeah, my heart stood still
Yes, their name was Bill/Ron
(with apologies to the Crystals)

Personally, I hate it when people ask me, "so, it must be sooo relaxing for you when you paint?" Uh, no, nope, not. I find the process of creating difficult but the ends justify. I hope.

Bill, separated at birth? Kevin C. can't say it is relaxing, far too much concentration and thought involved but somehow I view that as fun. Fun being one of these words thats nearly impossible to define.

Yes I find it fun, enjoyable, meditative, fulfilling, and surprising at times.

Yes, creating for me is VERY fun!!!!! I especially love the new art project challenges by our Art Licensing companies for puzzles... They are time-consuming but a total blast!

Yes, I have lots of fun. When things get a little stale I like to try something new to keep myself entertained. Probably the most fun I have now is experimenting to see what I can come up with.

I don't infer that I am miserable when working on art but the key word there is working. If one were just dipping a brush and playing with paint on the canvas, well that could be fun. But, if you are attempting to make an image that works? Well, I find that to be...work. Is there something else I would rather be doing? Not hardly. I am not confused by the illusion that the WORLD is awaiting my next creation. But as with most artists, I am just compelled to make more.

David Bridburg

Ron,

Push came to shove in my budget, I will run ads instead of buying the keyboard. Two big reasons, I need to spend more on the keyboard than I had thought, different model with more features and after Christmas people will be selling used keyboards received as gifts for the holidays en mass. I will get a board at a much better price.

Can running ads be fun? Odd bird here, yes.

Ronald Walker - "Bill, separated at birth?"

Or brothers from another mother?

Oh, and BTW, I usually have a ball when I paint... except for when I don't.

David, running ads can be fun but only if they pull otherwise there is nothing fun about dishing out money, I'm sure you know that. :-)

Bill, I noticed you live in Surprise, Arizona. There was a museum located there back some years ago that offered me a show. I was excited by it and then they had to close their doors due to finances. I know they tried to preserve their collection but am not sure how all that came out. Anyway I can say "I almost had a show there."

Girls just wanna' have fun!

I was a girl before I was a woman but I still "just wanna' have fun"........so I create.

Bill Tomsa

Ronald, we have only lived in Surprise for a little over 2 years, so not sure of which museum that might have been.

We have a couple of groups, the West Valley Art Council and WHAM and a couple of retirement community groups.

So it sounds like it was a while ago.

Bill

Think I may have found it Bill. It is the "West Valley Art Museum". Use to be located somewhere in Surprise and had to close their doors for a while, reopened at Peoria city hall. Been around for 36 years but at least it sounds like they saved the collection.

Bill Tomsa

I know it Ronald. Been there once. Nice facility.

Today I had fun. I needed an entry table for my guestbook for an upcoming art show. I found the perfect dilapidated old sewing table at an antique shop. It was so ugly that no price tag was present and the owner sold it to me for 35.00.

It has long legs and I sanded all the peely paint down to just a tine bit of paint, stained and varnished it and painted a floral abstract on the top. My husband made a template of the top of this table and bought a clear beveled plexiglass top and new duster pads for the bottom of the legs so it will slide easy.

I had so much fun creating my avant-garde table. I would say that painting for me is fun, which is why I'll be doing it a lot.

Drew

Sure I have fun Ronald! Drawing and painting are the few cognitive activities I can do in near chaotic conditions. The tv, radio, kids running around, noise of a cafe , none of these things bother me when I'm engaged. I guess I'm lucky because of this. Many of my creations were made during my kids piano lessons, soccer practices, swim meets, and soccer tournaments. Portability is part of why I have been able to achieve what I have.

During, yes. Tons.

Art and Heart has some known or unknown thread. The process of making my art gives me immense joy.

I'm probably the only person here who hit the wall on "this isn't fun anymore."

I'm teaching an art class, that *is* fun.

I'm the poster child for "If this isn't fun anymore, do something else."
I'm practicing law -- working for a law firm now, which is a combination of fun and not-so-fun, but at least the paycheck is better.

Kevin Callahan

I think when I most have "fun" with art is when I am exploring the great museums of the world and getting to see the work of those artists I read about in books. I am always inspired to go back to my studio and "make" something.

Yes I have fun, what can be more fun than creating a nude sculpture of the female human body? lol.

Drew

Well, I prefer the real thing myself! Definitely more fun!

I too enjoy exploring the museums of the world. I may be going to Berlin in June. Any recommendations?

Mario Carta

I can't argue with that Drew but as for artistic subject matter it comes in 2nd.

David Bridburg

Drew,

Depending on how much time you have, it might not be a stretch for you to get to the Rijskmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum.

In years past airlines like Ryanair were about $100 to skip city to city in the EU.

I have read galleries in Berlin, mid level, have been closing and moving. There is some sort of extra taxation on fine art in Germany.

I do not know much about museums in Berlin. I am sure there are a couple, but it might be like going to Dublin as far as museums go. The National Gallery in Dublin is truly wonderful, but not a major museum. Berlin is also a bit lower on the radar of major museums.

I am not seeing Berlin in this resource.

The other direction to go in with a Ryanair is the Hermitage.

Berlin to Amsterdam, Easyjet starts at $70.

Cheaper than driving there.

I have heard Berlin's Natural History Museum is very good.

Always. When I am out on the road with my camera and I stop at farms and lakeside or in gardens I meet the nicest, most interesting people. When I am scanning the shoreline and botanical gardens I find the most wonderful surprises that always make me giggle.

I remember each shot ,when I sit down to edit. The feelings and reason when I took the photos pops in my head and I find myself giggling all over again. Many photos I never use but I still enjoy seeing them and remembering the moment that view was the only view in my eye and head.

Drew,

Three other cities to consider for a day trip, Milan, Florence and Rome. Of course only one of them per day.
