I grew up in Auckland, New Zealand in the 80s. It was an era of big hair and even bigger personalities. I threw myself into the local scene fronting an original band called 'The Outspoken' as the singer/songwriter.
Our material was pretty dark but I expressed my happy side by writing a comic strip called 'Black Stump'.
I never made any real progress with either of those endeavors, but I sure had fun.
My first business was a car graphics company and I was involved in the sign industry for over 20 years.
I have been doing art in my spare time since I was a boy but have only got back into it recently.
Two things have inspired me.
The first was going to an art gallery and seeing some stick figure houses drawn in white pencil on black card. I said to my wife 'I can do that' but I went with full color and a completely different style. I kept the black paper though.
My real inspiration came in late July this year (2020). I was at my stepdaughter's place and saw 'landscape painter of the year' on TV. I was hooked. I watched every episode and then said 'if they can draw an amazing picture like that in four hours, then so can I'
Well, I still haven't managed to do a four-hour drawing yet but I am sure producing a lot of pictures with my efforts.
In September 2020 I decided to go one step further. Just to make things a little bit more difficult I started time-lapse recording my drawing process.
The bad news with that idea is, that I just made my creative process a lot harder.
The good news is that, if you go to my YouTube channel 'Playing with pastels' you can watch your favorite drawing being made.
Pretty cool eh?
I am currently living in Hamilton, New Zealand. The home of Hobbits and all things wild and wooly.
Most weekends I can be found out and about either walking my German Shapard or out with my wife Donna photographing old, weird, and wonderful buildings and saying 'I must draw that'
