Black History Month

Black History Month, cited by political leaders as African-American History Month, first began as a week-long celebration founded by historian Carter G. Woodson back in 1926 during the Harlem Renaissance. The purpose was to correct myths and misconceptions about the history of people of African descent, and, to inspire self-respect and hopefulness among African-Americans at a time when they were legally classified as second-class citizens. This month-long celebration has helped initiate racial and social justice from the Harlem Renaissance and Civil Rights Movement in the past to the establishment of Hip Hop and the Black Lives Matter movement in the present day. The artwork by Aberjhani in this collection follows the traditions of Black History Month by showcasing individual influential figures as well as innovative abstract and Silk-Featherbrush Artstyle canvases dedicated to cultural principles and practices championed by them.
