Native San Diegan Mix Luera's body of work encompasses a varied array of images and subject matters, offering the viewer a unique perspective on established themes. His paintings of the male figure in beautiful, idealized images, for example, offer us a different view of men, using them as metaphors of sexual and social duality.
His work with Mexican images and iconography gives us a fresh look at Mexican culture. In her Day of the Dead paintings and works as well as his assemblage pieces and collages, he expresses a love and respect for his Mexican roots and traditions that give the viewer a new perspective of an already familiar culture.
Mix has been painting for over 20 years. He holds a BA in Fine Art from the University of San Diego and an MFA from San Diego State University. He currently divides his time between painting and teaching Art and Painting at San Diego State University and the University of San Diego. In addition, Mix teaches the unique art of sugar skull making, helping to create the unique treats and decorations for this important Mexican holiday.
