Influenced by Aubrey Beardsley, Peter Max, M.C. Escher, Native American art, the flowing forms and lines of Art Nouveau as well as the psychedelic art movements of the 60s and 70s, native San Antonian, Mark Kohnitz, bases his works on pen & ink drawings created in the 1970s when he developed his distinctive style.

Everything we 'know' is energy, but we only see what we need to see.

Our daily world is an agreed upon ‘reality’. A familiar consciousness, which for the greater part, is unconsciously ignored for the simple reason that things at the human level of acceptable perception and perspective are seemingly unchanging and stable…..We are rarely cognizant of the tiny things unless they bite us and we are seemingly indifferent to the immeasurable depth and distances of an enigmatic universe. It is a mathematical soup of interacting visible and invisible energetic elemental chemical molecules…..all kept together by the same forces that are pulling it apart and rearranging it beyond imagination through chaos to its entropic doom.

My images represent these largely unseen energy patterns, interactions, dimensional structures, layering and melding of time, the dynamic forces and forms that we have agreed is 'reality’.

I symbolize these concepts through the pure design elements of lines, spirals, circles, arcs, dots, and spaces. Background randomness and color, each subjective, are important in how they affect the gestures from one design element to another and the entire aspect of an image. These basic thematic elements are my 'alphabet' or 'formulas' may be seen repeated across my body of works.

Though my pieces are predominantly non-representational, there are some intentionally implied elements which may be interpreted by the viewer's human need to see things they know and recognize and may be seen as structures, beings, artifacts, feathers, plants or astronomical bodies.

Bringing the unseen to the eye is my artistic endeavor.
