Born in Brooklyn, New York, LC Herst loved cowboys as a child. She moved to Arizona and rode every stable horse in Arizona. Prior to graduating from Arizona State University, LC joined several stock companies. She also taught art, music and drama in Arizona. After marrying, LC and her husband bought a ranch in Gilbert, AZ where they raised their kids, horses, cattle and peacocks. She then moved back to New York to attend the Art Students League. All the while, her fascination with cowboys never subsided and she would sketch and photograph cowboys on ranches and rodeos to be used as subject matter for paintings back in the studio. Herst found every opportunity to experience and witness first-hand the spirit of the west. As LC says, 'I rode my horse, Ambush in parades dressed as Cowboy Mollie. I used to ride with the 'Wild Women of the West, I left the group when I discovered they were not wild enough for me.'
As for her paintings, Herst states: 'My paintings reflect an honest, personal response to the world around me. I want to tell stories of the west through light, color, design and texture. I try to evoke an emotional rush in the viewer.'
