Jams Bauguess was born in Northern Virginia in 1978. At an early age, she found she could use art to emotionally distance herself from pain. She was heavily influenced by her childhood specifically cartoons, scenes of Pepe Le Pew floating on a plume of perfume that followed Penelope Pussycat. She was always impressed with the artists’ ability to show Pepe in a dreamlike love-spell. When the imprint of his heart could be seen beating through his chest, the message was clear for all watching.

Jams also strives to have emotions spilling out from her own paintings. The way she does this is by directly tapping into her own moods as she creates, giving an unobscured view into her soul.

Jams attended Virginia Commonwealth University’s art program in 1996 but left her sophomore year to experience life in a Colorado nudist colony. She lasted three months before returning to the east coast’s more conservative and clothed to find a better fit. New Orleans, Louisiana definitely was a fit. She painted on the streets of the French Quarter and the citizens often found her morbidity relatable and refreshing.

Jams’ future goals are to find her niche in the Northern Virginia arts community and bring a deeper appreciation to the lowbrow art scene.
