I'm from Hannibal, Missouri, a sleepy town on the Mississippi River.   My photography experience began in earnest when in the sixth grade I established a smelly darkroom in my parent's basement--with their tacit approval.   It now seems certain they thought it was a passing interest: It was not.   During college, I was employed on weekends by a busy studio photographing weddings.   Immediately upon graduation in 1967, I received orders to Vietnam.   For thirteen months I traveled Vietnam paying troops of the Navy Sea Bees and managed to take some...more
