'This world we live in is but thickened light.' Emerson

Quotidian, liminal, transcendent; these are states I see in the world as my perception and the light vacillates. Light has the power to give the quotidian transcendent properties. As the process proceeds I act in liminal space.

In my photography I use light to cast the ordinary in extraordinary terms. When light is unusually focused, or especially diffused, or particularly brilliant I pounce. It is a process of triangulation; object(s), geometry, light; when these three factors converge. I seize the fleeting opportunity.

My work is inspired by poetry and Transcendental writing such as the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote above and this one from Henry Peter Emerson, a relative of RWE, and a photographer in the late 19th century and early 20th:

'Do not be caught by the sensational in nature, as a coarse red-faced sunset, a garrulous waterfall, or a fifteen thousand foot mountain... avoid prettiness, the word looks much like pettiness, and there is but little difference between them.' Henry Peter Emerson.

Artist's Statement: Frank Winters, Photographer
A self taught photographer, I started taking photos casually 25 years ago and become more serious once I retired in 2005. When I traveled on business I took photos wherever I went. London, Amsterdam, Sydney New York, Boston. I still have a camera handy and take photos whenever I see something that moves me. The result is eclectic: nature (I am a conservationist having served as a Conservation Commissioner and on the board of a Conservation Trust) street photography, and oddities I come across serendipitously.

I moved to Cape Cod in April of 2012 and then to Olympia, Washington in December of 2019.

Artistic Vision
I look for the surreal in everyday, quotidian life, while beauty is naturally attractive, the surreal, along with the exquisite beauty often found as evidence of the impermanence of everything - wabi-sabi nature - is what I am happiest conveying.

I've had some success commercially, in galleries and museums. My work has been used as cover art and illustrations in books, etc. In 2019, three of prints were accepted into the permanent collection of The Cape Cod Museum of Art. This was done in Massachusetts. Now I'm working to get my work 'out there' in the Pacific Northwest.
