Meteora
The rocky pillars of Meteora in Trikala regional unit - Greece, which according to geologists started to take their shape 65 million years ago. It is of wonder that during the antiquity nobody seems to refer το these rocky volumes nor there is any myth associated to them. There has been discovered human presence around the area inside the cave of Theopetra. The DNA analysis revealed that humans have been living in Meteora at least since 50,000 BC. The first monasteries on the rocks of Meteora were built at the beginning of the 11th century. The medieval orthodox monasteries compose a unique architectural compound. The monasteries were built in such a way in order to protect those who chose to dedicate their lives to God from intruders or from Muslims during the Ottoman era. Nowadays exist 6 monasteries from the 24 that were built during the 14th and 15th centuries from which the 4 of them still host monastic communities.
