Hummingbirds - Sitting
This is a collection of Ruby-throated hummingbirds, Archilochus colubris, in sitting positions. Hummingbirds are one of the most amazing creates, they move their wings in a figure-eight pattern, which allows them to hover, and fly in all directions - including upside down. They don't migrate in flocks, but make the 2,000 mile trip to and from the southern states, Mexico and Central America on their own, and because of their excellent memory they return the following spring to the same flowers or feeders. Their eggs are the size of a jelly bean, in a nest the size of a golf ball or half-dollar. The oldest Hummingbird on recorded lived to be 14 years old. The experts believe that the average lifespan of a hummingbird is 3/4 years. They flap their wings 50-60 times each second or faster during chasing flights. Their heart pumps 1,260 beats per minute, and they breathe 250 times per minute. They weigh just 2 - 3 grams. To survive they must drink almost twice their weight in nectar every day. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird can be found throughout the eastern U.S. and southern Canada. These little guys weigh less than a nickel, yet they fly across the Gulf of Mexico (500/600 miles) in 18/22 hours, non-stop. They have been spotted resting on oil rigs in the Gulf. Except for the Shrew, they have the fastest metabolism on earth. We would have to eat 300 cheeseburgers a day to match their eating habits. The females do all the nest building, and raising of the young, even building a second nest while feeding her young. She feeds her young by drinking nectar and swallowing insects, then she regurgitates the mixture into the baby's stomach. To survive cold temperatures they reduce their body metabolism by 95%, this is called torpor. They spend most of their waking hours perched and resting. Hummingbirds usually start feeding 45 minutes before sunrise. Hummingbirds drink nectar through their tongue, which has grooves on the sides for catching insects. Truly amazing creatures!
