Gettysburg Battlefield
The Gettysburg Battle that was fought on July 1st thru July 3, 1863, did not end the war, (the war lasted another two years) but it is considered the greatest battle of the war and became a turning point for the Union. General Robert E. Lee who led the Northern Army of Virginia had 75,000 men under his command and General George G. Meade had 97,000 men under his command in the Union Army of the Potomac. So the chance meeting at Gettysburg with 172,000 men from both armies suffered 51,000 casualties from July 1st thru July 3rd. On July 3rd 12,000 Confederate soldiers advanced across open fields toward the Federal center, this became known as Pickett's Charge. This failed attack cost Lee over 5,000 soldiers in one hour, the battle was over. When General Lee retreated on July 4th there were still 22,000 wounded or dying men left on the battlefield along with 5,000 dead horses. In these three days of fighting more men died on North American soil than in any other battle. Together both sides had 634 cannons and used an estimated 569 tons of ammunition. Today there are 40 miles of roads that lead to over 1,000 monuments and cannons. This gallery showcases some of the awesome monuments that were erected in honor of these brave men.
