Iris Species - Bearded Iris
This gallery is dedicated to the Iris in ALL its glory. There are many iris to choose from, but they all have gray-green, sword-like leaves and are available in many colors/combinations. The "falls" meaning the 3 outer petals of each flower have a fuzzy center called a "beard." The 3 inner petals are erect/arching and called "standards." The edges of the flower are ruffled or laced. They are divided into 5 categories: 1. A self has solid, uniform color. 2. A plicata is usually white/yellow, with contrasting "freckles," or mottling. 3. A standards of the bicolor are one color and the falls are usually a darker color. Bicolors have subclasses, including: amoenas, white standards/colored falls; reverse amoenas, white falls/colored standards; and variegates, yellow standards/falls of purple, red or brown. 4. A bitone has standards of one color, and falls of a different value of the same color. 5. A blend, is a variety with 2 or more colors in the same flower. They bloom for 2 to 3 weeks. Tall stems arise from the foliage, branching toward the top to produce blooms on short pedicels. The plants spread by rhizomes, producing expanding clumps; which you need to divide periodically. Don't feed after blooming, because the plants need a few weeks to "rest."
