I have been a professional self-taught artist since 2007. I grew up on an animal rescue farm and nature preserve in Trinity, NC. There, all animals became my family. Each had a personality and a story to tell. For a child, it was a magical land with many lessons. They taught me to listen close and understand them in all their subtle ways. This fostered a deep respect for nature and animals from all walks of life. I adore them all, from cute and cuddly to creepy crawly.
My main mediums are acrylic painting and mixed-media gourd sculpture. My preferred style is whimsical realism; each painting captures more than just a realistic likeness, but their spirit as well. My gourd sculptures have a life all their own. Each is meticulously crafted with locally grown gourds, wire, and self-hardening clay. No detail is spared, from their expressive eyes to textured skin, all ready to spring to life. I find joy in the little details, no matter how tedious. It’s my way of looking closely, listening, and seeing what new stories the animals have to tell me.
