State of the ART Photography is the name of my studio
I am a 20 year exile from NYC. I came to Arizona to experience and photograph the American Southwest. I recently returned to to NYC and am excited about seeing the city through fresh eyes. I am a photographer from age 8, when my father gave me my first camera and proceeded to setup a darkroom for me. I am also a teacher of photography and mentor aspiring photographers.
My photographic philosophy is to immerse myself into whatever environment I find myself, using my 'Macro to Micro' approach. In this approach I first concentrate on the 'Big Picture', the Macro, taking in the surroundings through Wide Angle and Panoramic images. Next, I zero in on the smaller discrete elements that make up the scene. Yogi Berra's statement 'You can observe a lot by watching', summarizes it well.
It is through this two part process that I attempt to capture the essence of what I photograph. Working this way, and taking my time, I am able to more fully experience my surroundings and capture the images that really define the experience. I'm sure that my past life as a field biologist has impacted my powers of observation in a big way.
In the studio, I reconstitute the experience of a scene as either a collection of related images or a collage.
My motifs are very diverse, reflecting the breath of my own interests and my driving curiosity about the world we live in. Thus it's not hard to understand that I am almost never at a loss for subject matter that inspires me creatively.
