A native of St.Petersburg, Florida, Jim first became serious about photography at Midway Island Naval Station in 1971, where he served as crew chief of a sea/air rescue helicopter. The island was and remains a wildlife preserve that serves as a rookery for thousands of sea birds, most notably the Laysan Albatross. While at Midway, Jim assisted a team of Department of Interior biologists in a project to tag Hawaiian monk seals and sea turtles, and introduce some Laysan finches from another Pacific island to Pearl and Hermes Reef.

College life, work, and parenthood took Jim away from photography until 2003 when he began experimenting with his first digital camera. A fisherman most of his life, it was only natural that he would be drawn to the birds that had helped him find fish for so many years. He has since 'branched out' to photograph birds of prey and many other families of birds and inhabitants of nature.
Jim is a regular speaker and contributor of photos to various conservation groups. Published images can be found in a recent National Audubon calendar and a USFWS reddish egret working group. You can view his work at jimgrayimages.com and peruse his flickr photostream at
