Charles Bird King (1785-1862) Primarily a
portrait artist, Charles Bird King was working in Washington,
D.C. when he was hired by the War Department to document
visiting Native American dignitaries during the 1820s and 1830s.
At twenty, he studied under painter Benjamin West at the Royal
Academy in London.
