Yoga Angel at Midnight is a figurative abstract paintography piece. It is a digital rendering. that evolved from my original art photography of an amazing tree outside my studio here in Asheville, North Carolina. The visual story emphasizes the fraught process of selection we—each of us-- face daily—that being the choice to look for surprises and possibility in what is around us.

Story and Method: This image came together almost by accident. Most often these days I begin with a photo hunt. I translate the photo into digital format and look for the story or metaphor it tells. Digital manipulation creates the “terrain” when texture, patterns, repetition, and "fauve-wave" bits speak... sometimes into a collage. The juxtaposition of emphatic color with changing light symbolizes positive change. There are possibilities for understanding different perspectives....but....I almost didn't notice the blue angel until someone visiting my studio saw her hiding there! Possibly, among any number of my other pieces, highlights idea of change with compassion portrayed with color, metaphor, whimsy and humor.

Theme and Symbolism: : In this paintography piece, the angel symbolizes pure potential. The tree extending out to reach the figure is symbolic of strength and connection, while the juxtaposition of color with changing light symbolizes positive change through envisioning different perspectives. “ The journey is the reward.”

This piece creates its narrative via texture, patterns, repetition with references to "lyrical abstraction.” These elements meet to offer a feeling of coming together as the collection of concepts and forms take shape.
