Description

This beautiful yellow Swallowtail butterfly was enjoying these yellow wild flowers, going from flower to flower to gather nectar. I was happy to capture the inside of its wings with the pretty blue pattern along the bottom scallop.
The Yellow Swallowtail Butterfly is a favorite large butterfly (Papilionidae) of most people because of its brilliant colors. There are 600 species in the world but about 30 are in the United States -this one is in north Texas. Most have tails at their hind wings such as this one. They resemble a swallowtail bird and that is why they are named such. They feed on flowers and they do sip minerals and salts from mud or damp sand.
