Description
Yellow Iris Pillow
by Lisa Cassinari
This image was created from the photograph I took called Yellow Iris. Because it was intended for a pillow, the image was digitally altered to be more pleasing on a soft, 3D throw pillow.
Irises are one of my favorite flowers and I have planted them in my front garden. They are a sure sign that spring has finally arrived when I see their colorful blooms..
When I was a kid, I watched my mother draw them when she was doing ads for her best friend who was a florist. Her friend would come to our house with huge bouquets of flowers and my mother would arrange them and then draw them. It is a lovely memory to have of my childhood.
The Ancient Greek goddess Iris, was a messenger of the gods acting as the link between heaven and earth. She was considered the personification of the rainbow. Purple irises were planted over the graves of women to summon the goddess to guide the dead to the underworld. Ancient drawings have been found of them in a number of Egyptian palaces.
Irises are found in virtually every part of the world, and during the Middle Ages, the meaning of irises became linked to the French monarchy, and eventually, the Fleur-de-lis became the national symbol of France.
The Iris is a beautiful flower with a fascinating and rich history.
