My friend Texas Jack Glover. His great-grandfather was a cabin boy on Jean Lafitte's buccaneer ship during the heyday of Lafitte's Louisiana smuggling, and he was also a survivor of the ill-fated Texas Mier Expedition. Santa Anna, had been defeated in East Texas by Sam Houston. They were both Masons and Sam could not kill him. He went back to Mexico, but continued to raid Texas. The Mier Expedition in 1843 was a force of three hundred and eight men who took the city of Mier, Mexico in retaliation of a massacre of thirty-six Texans at Salado Creek east of San Antonio. Captured by a force of three thousand Mexican soldiers many were captured. Some escaped, but the terrain's harshness caused their recapture. Santa Anna was going to execute all 176 of them, but due to world pressure he relented, then changed his mind and said he would execute one out of every ten Texans. The patriots were each blindfolded and forced to draw one bean from a dusty clay jar. Inside were 159 white beans and 17 black beans. The drawing of a black bean was a death sentence the same day finalized by a piece of flying lead to the heart on March 25, 1843. Henry Journeay, his great grandfather, drew a white bean. Jack said that was the really the first ingredient in his 'Longevity Formula', it kind of helped stabilize and continue the family gene pool. Add to that a nightly dose of Jalapeno juice, some virgin olive oil, a Margarita, lightly salted Mexican Tequila, a one-third glass of red wine, and copious quantities of Copenhagen smokeless Long-cut tobacco through the day, and a man's got all he needs to live a long and happy life.
