With The Mothers
Painting - Acrylic On Paper
She had made this place her home and said she would never leave it. Every day, she would climb from the large cave where she slept up to the top of the mountains, “to be with the mothers,” she said. She would bring some small offering and sit in stillness. She would stay so long some days the birds who would rest on her shoulder might as well have built a nest above her head.
There was a stillness about the scene. Yet, when he would follow he would often feel as if the whole earth were being reformed before him and guardians of grace springing up from the ground while the trees turned into dancers to celebrate this day with her. She remained silent but in her silence now there was a softening, as if all that was etched in stone here was healing her, changing her, allowing her to forgive herself just a little and come back to life.
This painting is inspired by visits to Sainte-Baume, Provence, France, in 2016, and by all I know by heart.
