Painting - Watercolor On Paper
Winter offers many options.
Sometimes, there is the sheer delight of sitting in a warm room, next to a big window, and looking out at the cold, cold landscape outside. One almost shivers with delight at the contrast of being warm and comfortable, within sight of of the crisp coolness.
But there are other times – perhaps when we have been inside long enough and are feeling restless – that we don hat and coat, gloves and boots, and step outside for a walk. That first breath is a surprise to the lungs, rushing in with intensity and startling the senses.
Our initial step on the ground makes a crunch in the snow, a pleasant crunch, not of breaking things but of stepping on the snowy surface. Step after step we move forward as our eyes draw in the wonder of a truly magical landscape, one that sparkles and shimmers when the sunlight dances across it.
Winter Solitude invites us on this walk – a stroll brisk or slow through the countryside, a place that is known for its quiet and remote beauty. Filled with hidden places, the countryside is a landscape of trees and bushes, little copses of growth that hide even more surprises: in this case, a small pond ringed by a small woods.
What a jumble of branches and brush! One log has fallen, forming a narrow bridge across the water. The water itself is clear, and we can see the rocks and stones at the bottom, along with shadows that fall across both the surface of the water and the snow.
Branches, rocks, snow, water, shadows, light all work together to create an abstract view within a representational setting. It is quiet here, peaceful, a hidden spot where we stand for a moment, hands in our pockets, and feel the warmth of sun brush across the cold skin of our face.
What a good idea, we realize, to leave the warmth of the house and come out for a walk!
(Companion pieces to Winter Solitude are Winter Light and Snow Retreat, also on this site. The countryside of this painting is Southeastern Washington – farm and ranch and hiking and living country.)
Winter Solitude is featured in 26 Fine Art America groups.
