Description
The world from a window. A mystical silence accompanies our steps, a heavenly song resounds in this lava stone road, through windows closed by rusty iron grilles. They are the Benedictines, the cloistered nuns with their songs. Lives lived in the light of a window and in the great spiritual love.
Catania, via dei Crociferi, the heart of Baroque architecture in Sicily and the world.
The Via dei Crociferi in Catania is a monumental roadway built in the 18th century. It begins in Piazza San Francesco d'Assisi and is accessed by passing under the arch of St. Benedict.
The street, surrounded by churches, monasteries and a few civil dwellings, is an example of the unity of Baroque architecture. In the short space of about 200 meters there are four churches. The first one is the church of St. Benedict connected to the Benedictine nuns' convent by the arch of the same name that crosses the street and connects the Badia Grande to the Badia Piccola. It is accessed by a flight of steps and is surrounded by a wrought iron gate.
