Description
When found away from the beach Live Oak trees are a majestic sight to be seen. But those that live among the dunes along Southern beaches are often dwarfed and shaped by the prevailing winds. Shown here is a group of LIve Oaks on the beach at Cedar Island, North Carolina. Over head storm clouds threaten rain. The trunks or these oaks are bent and curved towards the inland, They have been shaped by the winds coming off the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound.
This beach is adjacent to the NC Ferry terminal where cars and their passengers are transported across the sound to Oakracoke Island. Substantially removed from the popular tourist beaches found at Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle, this remote beach is seldom crowded. There is a small herd of wild mustangs that roam this beach. Perhaps even more surprising, there is also a group of feral cows that inhabit the area.
